Tall Tree Cycles is Ottawa's premier bicycle boutique - owned and operated by Thom Johnson and Will Ficner. While Tall Tree carries most of the trappings of a normal bicycle shop, we also specialize in hard-to-find items, and we work on all sorts of unusual bicycles.
Our team will provide you with the best knowledge and service available … period! We do have quite a large knowledge base, and we won't feed you a load of bull if we don't know the answer to your questions. We would much rather do the research and find you the correct answer. Sometimes this can take a little bit of time, especially if you are looking for an obscure part or bit of information. … But bear with us … we will do our utmost to get you what you need.
Started in a garage in Westboro, Tall Tree migrated to a small car garage bay, and now we have moved to a much larger former auto-body garage. Seems like we just can't get away from the garage!
Where did that name come from? Well, it's quite simple really. While sitting around at the original garage and brainstorming, a lot of silly names were thrown around ...while looking down on us were a number of rather tall trees. The rest is history. We're pleased that the odd name seems to get remembered among the numerous generic bicycle store names out there.
Will and Thom are also the creators and designers of Steelwool Bicycles - which can be found at Tall Tree and other fine bicycle shops across Canada.
Will Ficner has been an avid cyclist from childhood. His first obsession was mountain biking, and this continues today on a long XC rides - tearing down ski hills, or racing at 24hr events. He has grown to thoroughly enjoy road riding, especially on dirt country roads with a group of friends. … And when he has a Sunday free (which is not nearly as much as he would like) you might find him at the bike polo court.
He also has penchant for anything to do with vintage bicycles, especially of the lugged-steel sort.
Thom Johnson is another avid cyclist from childhood. Coming from a mountain bike background, Thom can pretty much climb up a vertical wall on his mountain bike, and now that he is on big wheels he is aiming to scale an overhang. Once he is over the top he's gone. No slouch on the road bike either, he will make those who are determined to keep up hurt, badly!
While he doesn't race much anymore, he still manages to bring home a little precious metal every year.
Brad Kukurudz Tall Tree is lucky to have snagged one of the best mechanics around to run our service department. A shop rat since a kid, Brad has been in and out of the industry for 20 years. It seems that he just can't stay away (lucky for us, and you!). If you want to talk tandems, recumbents, cargo bikes, or dyno-hubs Brad is your man.
Blog: Matt & Rodd Blog Matt Surch, and Rodd Heino can be found hammering dirt roads North of Wakefield, doing fixed loops in the Gatineau park, or chasing gold medals at a 24hr MTB race. While always leading the front of the pack, they are the first ones to bring a newbie out and make sure they feel at home.
Race Team: Neil, Robb, Anna, Matt, Rodd, Karl, Candace, Greg: Some of Ontario's top athletes race for Tall Tree and you may have seen the green machine out on the road or trails. They are hard to miss, unless you blink!
Photos: Jordan Craig You will notice that many of the stunning photos on this site are shot by local photographer extraordinaire Jordan Craig. www.jordancraigphotography.com Jordan has started shooting many of his photographs off the back of his Steelwool Tweed, which allows him to get into spots that would normally be difficult to get to.
Site design and build: Not only designers and developers, the Fifty team, who helped put our website together are also obsessive riders.
